South Barwon was planted by the Geelong Christian Reformed Church in 1989 and was first led by Pastor Bart Kroon through the 1990s.  During this time it met in the Grovedale Community Centre on Heyers Road.

After Bart left to take up chaplaincy in a local high school, the church moved to its current location at the Reformed Theological College (RTC) on Pigdons Road in Waurn Ponds.  Since then it has been lead by Pastors Murray Capilll (2001-05) and John de Hoog (2007-10), who both finished serving in South Barwon to take up lecturing positions at the RTC.

Recently the church called and appointed Clinton Berends to be its pastor.  Clinton began his ministry here in July 2011.

In late 2012 the church decided to begin putting together in team for a church plant from South Barwon. In early 2013 Phil Popping was appointed as a Church Planting Intern to head up this work. This church plant is named "The Hub" and they began meeting at Grovedale College in April 2014. More information can be found at their website

In 2013 the church began to explore how it might engage with and serve the local community in a stronger way. Out of this desire the church began the 3216 Connect Op Shop in July 2014. The Op Shop is located at 2 Dendle Street Grovedale. More information can be found at it's website
